Ladies Chairs (pair)

Catalogue Reference 105

( Product ID 0000000016 ) ( Category: Chairs, Stool and Benches )

These particular chairs are from the family of side chairs. However, their diminutive size identifies them as being made for ladies rather than men to sit on. The chair is a status symbol so making a chair primarily for a woman is a mark of respect as she would have held a higher social position than those relegated to stools or left standing. A lady, or even a concubine, would have sat on the chair playing music to entertain guests or to undertake other household activities.
The design of these chairs is very simple. The front of the apron has a chrysanthemum medallion symbolising elegance and nobility. The sides have decorative wave motif, which symbolizes prosperity. The back leg posts extend all the way to the top rail. From a structural point of view, using a single piece of timber in the vital supporting posts reinforces the structural strength.
